This news report takes note of the fact that a new research shows that 1 in every 100 pupils are showing symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. This means that they experience extended periods of fatigue and feeling tired all the time. This also results in the children missing classes and having a lot of problems with concentration.
There are a lot of misconceptions about this condition and to many people’s surprise there is no cure available. In total 1% of the students had chronic fatigue and it accounted for more than 6% of students who were missing more time in school than usual. This is obviously a devastating number and definitely when it leads to absenteeism in schools. Some of the affected children are currently undergoing a behavioral therapy which alters the way people think and cope with their symptoms. Another part of the children undergo another form of therapy in which they have a gradual increase of activity to see if they will be able to combat the illness by being more active than they used to.
I think this illness is quite tough on the children and also gets a lot of strange looks from parents. Usually kids are quite active and this illness completely eliminates that part of childhood, that and the fact that they are missing out on school makes me think that this should get more research than it already has.
