With that headline they do not mean that the UK would show more shows like Oprah of Dr. Phil. With this they mean that there will be lots of smaller channels who are linked to a region. For example an entire channel dedicated to news from in and around Liverpool. In a way this would seem like a good idea, the UK is a large country and the BBC is but one channel and not always able to show all the regional news. The smaller channels would make sure that smaller regions won´t feel left out when it comes to news. The downside to this idea is the chance of ‘non-news’, i.e. news from the smaller regions that even the locals don’t care about. Each channel would have to have a sufficient funding to reach the set goals. "It can evolve over time but you have to have compelling content with a local connection and quality people running your operation. You cannot do it on the fly with smartphone cameras recording birthday parties." Says Dennis Wharton, of the National Association of Broadcasters, in Washington DC.
In my opinion I don’t think the idea is very good, we have regional news channels in The Netherlands and they tend to have little to no funding and showing news that one can find on the internet hours and sometimes days earlier. The idea in itself is okay, knowing the pressure on the BBC, but the smaller channels would definitely need quite some funding.
