In a way this seems to grow into a global phenomenon; obesity with kids. And this has also struck the UK, of course this was already a hot topic in the UK but the new figures pointing at a rise in the kids obesity have flared up the discussion again. NHS figures for the past year show 19% of children in their final year of primary school were classed as obese, compared with 18.7% the previous year. The problem seems to be the biggest in London and the south of England, the number are also higher in deprived areas and urban environments.
The news bulletin is really short and doesn’t really go into causes, I have read once that the meals they serve at school are usually not very healthy and may be one of the causes of this increase. On the other hand the school meals were a discussion quite some time ago and you would think they corrected the meals already. It should also be noted that the numbers seem to be higher in the lower income areas and urban environments. In a country as the UK one would assume it would be the other way around, at least I would assume that, so it kind of surprised me to read this.
